Construction Project for 5 x 40,000KL Oil and Gas Tanks / Naptha Tanks / Paraxilyne TPPI - Tuban
East Java, December 8, 2020 – The construction of five oil storage tanks, each with a capacity of 40,000 kiloliters (KL), by PT Trans Pacific Petrochemical Indotama (TPPI) in Tuban, marks a major milestone in strengthening Indonesia’s national energy infrastructure. As part of a national strategic project, this initiative holds great operational and strategic importance for the petrochemical and energy sectors in Indonesia.
By week 63 of construction, project progress has continued on schedule with strict quality control across all phases. The tanks are being built under high technical standards, with multi-level supervision to ensure safety, durability, and long-term reliability of these large-scale fuel storage systems.
These storage tanks are specially designed to hold a variety of petrochemical products such as Naptha and Paraxylene, which are essential components in the downstream oil and gas industry. Each tank features a large steel structure equipped with advanced welding, coating, and cathodic protection systems to withstand internal pressure, high temperatures, and potential corrosion from stored chemicals.
The materials used comply with international standards, including API 650 for tank design. The tanks are also equipped with temperature and pressure monitoring systems to ensure product stability. Additional safety features such as floating roofs, flame arrestors, and automated fire protection systems are incorporated to enhance operational safety and environmental compliance.
With a total capacity of 200,000 KL, these five tanks significantly boost Indonesia’s energy storage capacity. This expansion is vital amid rising energy demand and the need to strengthen domestic energy reserves. The project not only supports continuous supply for the national petrochemical industry, but also reduces import dependency and ensures reliable feedstock for local refineries.
As the project owner, TPPI plays a crucial role in integrating these tanks with existing refinery and production infrastructure within the Tuban industrial zone. Adequate storage capacity improves refinery efficiency and provides flexibility for distributing final products across the Indonesian archipelago.
By week 63, field documentation highlighted substantial progress in multiple construction areas. Major structural steel installations are nearly complete, with ongoing welding and plate erection activities. Internal tank inspections have been conducted using radiographic and dye penetrant testing to verify the integrity of weld joints.
Meanwhile, installation of piping systems, spiral stairways, and manholes is proceeding in parallel. The tank exterior is also being coated with a protective primer to safeguard against corrosion. Work is being executed in rotating shifts to meet the targeted project completion timeline.
This project is a result of close collaboration between fabrication contractors, technical consultants, and TPPI’s project oversight team. Every construction phase is carefully monitored—from material procurement and fabrication to on-site installation. All tank components are certified and accompanied by key documentation such as Material Test Certificates (MTC), Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) reports.
The project also employs a digital project management system to monitor progress, track material usage, and evaluate team performance on a daily basis. This ensures optimal efficiency and precision despite the technical challenges and environmental conditions at the site.
TPPI’s oil storage tank project is part of a long-term commitment to building modern, resilient national energy infrastructure. Backed by advanced technology, skilled human resources, and disciplined project execution, the project is expected to be completed on time and deliver substantial benefits to the country’s energy sector.
The success of this initiative also reflects the capability of Indonesia’s construction and manufacturing industries in handling complex, large-scale projects. TPPI continues to promote collaborative and innovative work practices in every project to realize an independent, secure, and future-oriented energy landscape.
